Biography of Mayor Gail D. Mitchell
Gail D. Mitchell was born in East St. Louis, IL. in 1937. He was raised in Ava, IL. and moved back to East St. Louis in 1953 where he resided until he moved and settled in Fairview Heights, IL. in 1963.
Gail and his wife of 48 years, Vera reside at 9738 Ridge Heights Road. They have been residents of Fairview Heights since October 1963. Gail and Vera have 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
Before becoming Mayor of the City of Fairview Heights, Gail was employed by General Motors from 1956 until he retired in Nov. of 1987.
In 1983 Gail was elected Fairview Heights Alderman of Ward III where he served until 1987. He was re-elected as Alderman in 1991 and served a second 4 year term until 1995 where he ran for and successfully gained the office of Mayor of the City of Fairview Heights. Gail was re-elected in April 1999 to serve a second term. Currently, Mayor Mitchell is serving his third term after being re-elected in April 2003.
While serving the citizens of Fairview Heights as their Mayor, Gail has been very active in the many local organization’s. He also has served as President of the Southwestern Illinois Council of Mayors during the period of 2001-2003. Mayor Mitchell is currently serving on the Board of the Illinois Municipal League as Vice President.
